Graphics DesignStarter Guide

A beginner-friendly guide to colour, typography, layout, branding and creating clearer visual content.

Inside this guide
01 · GUIDE

Start With Purpose

Good design begins with what the message needs to communicate and who needs to understand it.

Audience

Know who the design is speaking to.

Message

Identify the one main idea that must be understood.

Priority

Decide what viewers should notice first, second and third.

→ Decoration comes after communication. Make the message clear before adding effects.
02 · GUIDE

Understand Colour

Colour influences attention, mood and brand recognition, but it works best when used with restraint and enough contrast.

Palette

Choose a small family of colours that work together.

Contrast

Make important text and actions easy to see.

Consistency

Reuse colours with the same purpose across designs.

→ More colours do not automatically create a better design.
03 · GUIDE

Use Typography Well

Typography shapes how information is read. Strong hierarchy helps viewers scan a design quickly.

Hierarchy

Use size and weight to show importance.

Pairing

Keep font combinations simple and complementary.

Readability

Avoid tiny text, weak contrast and overly decorative body copy.

→ If every line looks equally important, the viewer has no clear path through the design.
04 · GUIDE

Build Better Layouts

Spacing, alignment and composition turn separate elements into one organised visual system.

Alignment

Connect elements visually by lining them up.

Spacing

Give related items appropriate space while separating unrelated items.

Balance

Distribute visual weight so the layout feels intentional.

→ Clean spacing can make a simple design look more professional immediately.
05 · GUIDE

Create Visual Hierarchy

Hierarchy tells the eye where to begin and how to move through the content.

Scale

Larger elements usually attract attention first.

Position

Placement can make an element feel more or less important.

Emphasis

Use contrast, colour or weight selectively.

→ Choose a focal point rather than making every element compete for attention.
06 · GUIDE

Think in Brand Systems

Brand design is more than a logo. Consistent colour, type, imagery and layout help people recognise a brand.

Identity

Define a recognisable visual direction.

Rules

Decide how colours, fonts and logo treatments are used.

Consistency

Apply the system across different content formats.

→ A simple system used consistently is stronger than a complicated style used randomly.
07 · GUIDE

Prepare Work for Digital Use

Finished designs need to fit the platform where they will appear and be reviewed before publishing.

Dimensions

Design for the intended format and screen.

Export

Choose an appropriate file type and quality.

Review

Check spelling, alignment, crop, contrast and readability.

→ The design is not finished until the exported version has been checked.
BEGINNER PROJECT

Build a Mini Brand Kit

Choose a fictional business and create a simple visual direction: colour palette, typography choices, logo treatment and three social media graphics that feel like the same brand.

FINAL CHALLENGE

Create a 3-Piece Campaign

Design a flyer, square social post and story-sized graphic for the same promotion. Keep the message, visual hierarchy and branding consistent across all three formats.
